Description: The “Feast of Resistance” was created to make learning Asian American history fun. It uses food to convey the Asian American experience. Moments in history are symbolized through food items like grape juice, salmon, and nectarines. By highlighting Asian American struggles for social justice, participants are encouraged to find inspiration and connections to their own lives. As an alternative to traditional educational methods, the exercise taps into a variety of learning styles and can help build a sense of community among participants. Gronk Studio Tour: No Movie Set Fowler Museum More Information


Description: Spend an afternoon with UCLA professor Chon Noriega and multifaceted artist Gronk. From street murals to mail art, from large-scale action painting to performance art and operatic set design, Gronk has made a lasting mark on the L.A. art scene and the cultural world stage. The tour will start at the Fowler Museum with Gronk's just-completed, large-scale painting installation, then move downtown to the artist's studio, and conclude at the Glendale Planetarium for a private screening of Gronk's all-digital full dome animation, BrainFlame. Philosophy of Lettering: Chaz Bojorquez Hammer Museum More Information


Description: Artist Chaz Bojorquez has been immersed in the graffiti tradition of East Los Angeles Mexican Americans since the 1950s. He has combined graffiti, his formal fine art education, and extensive Asian calligraphy studies, becoming one of the best-known and most original graffiti artists from Los Angeles. Bojorquez will demonstrate how art and culture define his experience as well as his philosophy about the value and execution of letters. Description: The UCLA Center for EthnoCommunications and the Hammer Museum are holding a film screening to recognize EthnoCommunications alumni student films and multi-ethnic Los Angeles. Watch short films that highlight a skateboard crew in Long Beach; the Bus Riders’ Union and one of its eldest organizers, Grandma Kim; the issues students face in the low-income high school, Belmont High School; South Asian motel owners; and the struggles of Latino immigrant truck drivers who work the port of Los Angeles. Cosponsors include the Asian American and Pacific Island Studies Undergraduate Association (APIUA) and the Asian American Studies Graduate Students Association.

Don, as the publisher, with Lowell Chun-Hoon, the founding editor of Amerasia Journal, has indeed realized his vision of creating an "open forum" for the best Asian American scholarship. This special issue includes reprints of essays written by Don T. Nakanishi and invited contributors.
